I second Ann's thought that this family needs to be seen by an LC as soon
as possible.

I also wonder if the baby doesn't have thrush--just treating one member
of the dyad is NOT a good idea. Babies can be asymptomatic, although I
would suggest that this baby DOES have symptoms--unsettled at breast,
crying, pulling on and off--can be symptoms of a baby whose mouth hurts
(thrush). Even if baby's mouth doesn't look thrushy I would be
suspicious. And if mother was treated with diflucan--was it per Jack
Newman's protocol? Most docs tend to underprescribe diflucan and mom
gets a little better, but when the diflucan stops, thrush comes back with
a vengeance!

Good luck in helping this family! No mom should be crying in pain while
she nurses!!

Warmly,
