<< If this was yeast on her nipples would the infant
have yeast from the milk?>>

No.

<<Mother says she has tried Dr. Newman's nipple ointment in the past and
it didn't help. She was washing it off before pumping. >>

I have not found any antifungal ointment to be reliable at treaing yeast
overgrowth on nipples. It IS helpful to prevent overgrwth from recurring.

Does she have psoriasis elsewhere on her body? (Now or ever) It makes a
white plaque.

If not, and the surrounding skin is hot pink, then it is probably yeast.
Gention violet 1/2 or 1% solution applied once a day for 5 days. Then the
nipple ointment that has miconazole powder in it, NOT nystatin. (there is a
fair amount of resistance to nystatin out there.( applied after every
pumping.

As for getting a 5 month-old to breast at this point, it can happen, but
difficult. Try cobathing without an agenda.
