I received a few comments about the reading level of materials. Please
understand that I am NOT saying all WIC clients are only able to read at a
low level. I have clients who enjoy Shakespeare and very technical
articles. But as someone else mentioned even hospitals and newspapers make
their reading material at 4-6th grade levels.
I cannot in class give one mother one level and another to a different
mother - that would be demeaning. I want to provide the information in a
level that ALL (or the majority) can understand.
I did not mean for people to take it personally. WIC has reading guidelines
for handouts and materials. It is meant to encompass most clients. Granted
we have some clients who cannot read and write at all. They will fall
through this loop and need extra assistance.
Please remember that we on Lactnet are in the same boat. We love
breastfeeding - we love helping women breastfeed and before you pick up a
stick and shake it at a fellow Lactnetter remember we are all in this
together.
