Cee asks: << So... should those who find glaring errors in textbooks write
to the publisher? Will that do any good at all? >>
Absolutely YES, and also write to the author(s)! PLEASE!
Speaking for myself, I don't like to find errors anymore than anyone else,
and I like it even LESS if the error is in something I've written!!! I'd far
rather hear about a mistake quickly by someone who cared to write, than find
the mistake much later after much grumbling about my lousy work. My
reputation is unavoidably on the line with every word I put into print. It's
painfully embarrassing to find a mistake in something I've written, and even
worse if nobody points it out till half the world thinks I'm a careless or
uninformed idiot. (Think walking into a formal dinner with toilet paper
stuck to your shoe).
When I'm questioned about something I've written, I try to view the question
/ challenge as an opportunity to (1) re-examine my writing for clarity and
accuracy, and (2) do a little bit of teaching for the person who cared
enough to write. If I was wrong or unclear, I'll say so and do whatever I
can to correct the mistake or misunderstanding.
OK, so I'm not perfect. I can get a little testy when I'm questioned about a
point that is completely accurate and on-target when challenged for the 58th
time in a given week.
