Christina has described a disappointing situation in her hospital regarding the lack of knowledge by NICU staff?regarding human milk and the hazards of infant formula. Think about going to your Quality Control Department, describing the problem with examples of what has been happening,?and asking that they form a quality improvement group to address these issues. Inform your Risk Management Department about the increased risk that patients experience when not fed human milk and make sure they are part of the quality improvement project. You could also ask your hospital's attorney about "gag orders" to see if deliberately withholding information from patients is legal. It sure is not ethical. Perhaps your Ethics Committee would have something to say about that. Gather any supporters you have and see if you can make changes using the hospital's various resources.
