It appears if these circumstances did indeed occur as related by the mothers that the HCPs did not adequately explain to the mother and the doula what the purpose of the IV fluids were. And I have to assume that this mother was not able to drink enough fluids to produce enough hydration.  That vulnerable mother seems to have been caught in the dilemma between the doula's opinion, one who may not have been well enough educated,and the advice of her health care provider.   It's hard to imagine that a doula who is there to support the mother abandons her when things are not ideal.

As to the explanation of the opinion against the nasogastic tube feedings, it makes no sense.  A baby being fed that way is not tasting anything!  These babies may not have been coordinating sucking and swallowing and breathing well enough to do well with oral feeding.
