Hello all -
Attended the Art of Breastfeeding conference in Chapel Hill NC a couple of weeks ago and one of the speakers was talking about Vitamin D deficiency.
As it turns out, in the US, the majority (86% in sunny Charleston SC) of dark skinned women are deficient in vitamin D, hence their breastmilk is also deficient.
If you treat MOM with large doses (40,000 IU's) of vitamin D daily (yes - 10 times the amount in a 'normal' vitamin), not only will mom's Vitamin D level come up to normal, her breastmilk will contain enough for the baby as well.
If you're interested in more info, email me, I'll send research along, I'd include it now, I just don't have it handy.
Best wishes,
:)
