*sigh* I have to be honest in reading this case.
As many IBCLCs, I've seen more cases like this than I would like to. PPD or
not, it appears this mother does NOT want to breastfeed. (Plenty of women
who do have PPD manage to breastfeed successfully. I've personally been
there, depressed, and still struggled through, and succeeded, in the days
when your only salvation was a kind LLL leader, in the days before IBCLCs.)
**Wonderful post, Mary. I fully agree, although sometimes I get the
impression I am not supposed to feel this way or say it out loud... Yet, I
consider this a reality, as sad as it may be... :-(
I am in line with you: we have to save our often scarce hours for those who
are willing to work with us. I was preparing a brochure to promote my
private practice-to-be (end this year, when I pass the exam) and my
classmates said: "You are addressing a specific audience. Some may like your
views, some may not, so maybe you should adjust your wording." (Used wording
to create a mental picture of every breastfeeding woman being the next in a
millennia long chain of females giving birth and nursing their infants,
something like that.) I won't. The way I put, is the way I want to work,
because my heart and soul are in it. I won't be able to be authentic if I
try to accommodate those who don't want to breastfeed or solve problems. I
want to work from my strengths, not from my politically correct attitude...
Warmly,
Marianne Vanderveen, Netherlands
