Just last week I read in a national newspaper about the value of
ex-psychiatric patients working in these health care settings. Because they
have expert knowledge and know what people go through, they can provide
valuable assistence in the treatment. I was amazed by how easily I could
change 'psychiatric patient' into 'breastfeeding mother' and have the
peer-counseling concept!
I think I will write to the newspaper and bring this to their attention in a
reader's letter; knowing how much a good bf experience contributes to mental
health and secure attachment, I'd reckon more emphasis should be put on our
role as breastfeeding volunteers and lc's, so that fewer people need
ex-psychiatric patients to help them through their troubles later on...
