Off topic it is ...but also it is not. Animals do it so can we.

This is not really rare.

I have personally had two different dogs do this for kittens. Neither dog had ever had puppies.
My first dog was a two year old Irish setter. I lived in the country and someone dropped off a tiny black kitten that was at most 4 weeks old. Within a couple days of this kitties arrival , I found the dog nursing her. Brandy produced milk from one teat and weaned the kitten at about 3 months.

Cut to several years later. I had a 3 year old Cocker spaniel(who never had puppies)and a cat with kittens. The mother cat raised her kitties, taught them to hunt and eat dry food, weaned them at 3 months or so. I found homes for all but one of them. He was nursing from the dog before we knew it(his mother had already weaned him) Tasha mothered him for 3 or 4 years, especially when he was hurt or lonely whatever. When she developed breast cancer the nursing relationship ended. However, they remained close until she died.

Not very rare when both of my female dogs have done it. Seems that humans should be able to do the same thing.

Did anyone see in their (U.S.) newspaper today about a golden retriever that
induced lactation for an orphaned kitten? The article specified that the
dog had not given birth in 18 months but after she started nursing the
kitten, she started producing milk. Of course it's still a novelty, which
is why it was reported, but I find it interesting that so many are quick to
deny that the same could happen in humans.
What a sweet dog and lucky kitten!
