Hi I have recently rejoined Lactnet, i am a midwife/IFA working in the UK and am sitting the exam this summer [beginning to realise how much there is to learn!!!]
I would like to ask your advice about a Dyad i have been visiting recently, the baby is now 5 weeks old, when she was 2 weeks Mum had very sore nipples and was advised by GP to give bottles for a few days to allow the nipples to rest. The baby now seems to have severe suck/nipple confusion, she is unable to suck on the breast, does a little better with a nipple shield, but still can only be at the breast for 10 minutes before becoming completely frustrated. Baby seems to want to be at the breast, and Mum is desperate to breast feed, she is expressing, but not often enough as it is taking up so much time, so her supply is dwindling. she is offering breast using a nipple shield, then giving ebm with a teat as baby will not take cup feeds either, then she is giving formula as well, baby feeding every 2-3 hours, thriving well.
I have suggested co-bathing and mum was going to give it a go. No tongue tie.
I would be grateful for any more suggestions as mum is so keen to get baby back to the breast.
Many Thanks,
Marion Copeland.

Subject: WA state residential parenting program
I live and work in the community where this program is established. The Residential Parenting Program in the WA State Corrections Center has a very high breastfeeding initiation rate for these mothers, they are encouraged and supported in their efforts to breastfeed. The facility also has 2 Lactinas on site in the event the mother would benefit from the use of an electric pump and the mothers are provided breastfeeding support and resources during their hospital stay. The program has a relationship with a local hospital outpatient lactation clinic and also receives support and referrals to resources from our local Breastfeeding Alliance and state health department.
You can find more details about the program here:

He said he'd just tell anyone who complains, to go somewhere else and stop
acting like an idiot. I asked if they were told where the mother/baby centers
were, and he said no, he just thought mothers nursed whereever they were. So
if anyone goes to Disney this summer, you have a friendly lifeguard?at the
Coronado Resort.
He is 19 yrs old, and nursed for just over 3 yrs. And of course grew up at
LLLI conferences and meetings.

Barbara,
Thanks for sharing your comments, or your son's actually. Your son sounds
like mine, who wrote several papers and did at least one or two presentations
on breastfeeding in college. I reread a paper recently and thought, yes he
gets it. As for your son, he sounds like one of the few young man that might
pass the inspection of my son for his "little sister" who is nearly 17, a
swimmer/lifeguard in training and also a huge advocate of nursing as normal...:)
Glad you are recovering from the CDif.
Peace,
Judy

Here's another example of a kid "getting it" I don't have permission to
reprint here, but if you go to the Lactivism forum at mothering.com, a mom
has shared a wonderful story from a coffee shop in the UK. Well worth the
click to get there.

While not directly about breastfeeding, I thought this article (and the
study, if you're able to find it from the information given in the article)
might be useful to breastfeeding mothers who are trying to prevent overnight
visitation while their babies are very young.
