The class that I am currently teaching for the last 9 years is a 3 hour class, I
had previously done onger ones, but for my community the 3 hour seems to be
doing well. I start with an easy game - 4 quads on a black board labeled the
postive and negative of Breastfeeding for mom and baby each-- the class
gives that answers and I throw treats (typically chocolate) for every answer--
Correct or not it all goes on the board. The dads love this game and shout
out all kinds of things!! I then go back through the answers and talk up each
item with the facts and cross off the myths with the research behind-- This
typically takes 30-45 min but covers a HUGE amount of material and most
importantly the participants real thoughts and concerns. Then very basic
anatomy and milk production, follow by the how too's and the end focus is
how to get help with breastfeeding after the baby is here. I chose to stop
talking about the potential negatives (engorgment, lack of milk) in detail after
attending a class where that converstation took over anything positive. I
remember leaving that class feeling like there must be alot of woman deal with
these negative issues since it was part of the topics. Which thankfully is not
true!! I feel that a prenatal class should be very positive, with dispelling
myths that may stop a woman from even trying to breastfeed and letting her
family know that help is available for when the baby is here. Good luck and I
know what ever education you give will be helpful!!
