I'll bet the human milk banking association, is it HBMA?, I forget and am
not near a source, has some info on other uses of human milk. I wish I could
remember where (and when) the conference was that this was discussed among the
attendees.
Some of you have heard me speak about my 81/2 month pregnant sister being
badly burned, giving birth a week later and me becoming familiar with pumps
(1973), pumping her milk and using it on her burns. Sorry about the run-on
sentence. The doctors were going to use the data at a Burn convention but backed
out. My sister healed much faster than they thought and didn't require as
much grafting as previously thought. (Her milk couldn't leave the burn unit).
I nursed her newborn and my year old. My sister drank her milk and put it
on her burns. She also reached across and put it where she could reach, onto
the chest of the woman in the next bed. She was a waitress serving Cherries
Flambe, burned on her neck and upper chest. Where the milk went healed
faster and better. It's anecdotal but real and over the years, I have read that
the Chinese have used human milk on burns for a long time.
My memory is also that there is more than lore than the Native Americans
used human milk on wounds, conjunctivitis and congestion.
I would love to hear more stories and sources. Off to a client right now.
