Congratulations on the new grandbaby. In our NICU, we find that having mom
hold infant skin to skin for at least a couple of hours/day also helps with
milk production. She should pump just before and after holding. We are having
good luck with hand massage before pumping, double pumping for 15-20 minutes,
then single pumping with massage/expression to more completely empty breasts.
We tell moms that by the time their infant is 2 weeks old, she should be
making at least an ounce/hour, i.e, if she goes 2 hours between pumpings, she
should be able to express at least 2 oz. I would encourage 3-4 hours sleep at
night with 2-3 hour pumpings during the day for 8-10 pumpings/24hrs.
Good luck,
Chris Smith, RN, IBCLC
