In the past, as hosp LC, I used finger and/or cup feeding. Eventually got babies to breast (sometimes creatively using shields etc.) I found that babies could get stuck on either method (cup or finger) - imprinting isn't as recognized as it ought to be :-( (I think it is imprinting that causes problems, not nipple confusion - but that is semantics and another whole discussion.)
But I also found that 'why' we were alt feeding was a key. Was it a baby suck problem or just needed extra calories for whatever reason (mom not avail etc.)? Suck problems worked out better for me with finger feeding. Don't ask me why, I didn't do a study, used my intuition. Of course, I'm sure there is someone else out there who has had just the opposite experience! Pat in SNJ
