Im a little confused about Marian's post. So Marian please forgive me if I misread it. It
appears that you are saying that we have to inform parents about the risks of cosleeping,
not the risks of NOT cosleeping. Maybe there was a typo in your post or maybe I'm not
quite understanding your wording.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends cosleeping (defined as within close
proximity to the parents) as one of the key measures to REDUCE the risk of SIDS. The risk
of SIDS is much higher when the baby sleeps alone in a separate room. And SIDS used to
be called crib death.
Blankets, mattresses, and other objects near the infant are the same no matter where the
infant sleeps.
Bed sharing is a different matter than can also be safely achieved. James McKenna has
done a lot of research on this. If you meant BED SHARING then that is when one needs to
include education about MORBID obesity, alcohol abuse, etc.
Bed sharing is but a SUBSET of cosleeping.
Best, Susan
