I just heard from a mother I worked with over six months ago. She ended up
exclusively pumping for her baby, and baby has received only breastmilk
since two months. Mother has lots of milk stored in freezer. She is using a
Medela Pump-In-Style that is 3 1/2 years old (from her first child), and
also has a Medela rental pump (Symphony or Lactina, not sure which). Today
she discovered mold in her Pump-In-Style. It is in the area where the tubing
connects to the pump, behind the faceplate on the pump, and on the diaphragm
in the pump. She doesn't know how long it has been there. She has not seen
any mold in the tubing, and has not noticed anything wrong with her milk.
Baby has not shown any signs of illness.
Mother's question is whether it is safe to continue feeding her baby the
breastmilk she has already pumped and frozen (she has quite a lot), or
whether she needs to throw it all out. She would like an answer as soon as
possible, and any specific information that can be provided will be helpful.
The mother is a pediatrician, so is knowledgeable, and is concerned in part
about any long-term health impact that might result from feeding her
daughter contaminated milk.
Thanks so much!
