Deli meats are quite good at harboring the Listeria bacteria, as well. If
you get one contaminated meat, it's sliced on the meat slicer in the store,
the next meat will become contaminated when it is sliced on the used/dirty
slicer (have any of us seen a slicer cleaned between uses?). Since Listeria
grows well at a low (refrigerator) temperature, it reproduces quickly.
I suspect we see more listeria than we realize, most symptoms are not
terrible, and leave quickly (vomiting, diarrhea). When deli meat gets slimy,
it's most suspicious, but it will be growing bacteria before it gets that
slimy feel.
This is the reason it is recommended for *all* deli meats to be microwaved
for 1 minute before home storage.

<<I just wanted to mention that Listeria is quite common on the outside of
fruits and vegetables. My husband works in the fruit industry and here in
Perth, Western Australia there are regular random checks of growers fruit
and vegetable produce for, among other things, Listeria - often with
positive results. So that's why you should wash all your fruit and
vegetables thoroughly in good quality water before consumption.
