I beleive that
practitioners who use this additive, especially with later date premies like
32+ wks, are not well read about the proper use and are getting most of
their info from the formula sales people. (my opinion). I also beleive that
these same practitioners are not well experienced with bf + premies and just
don't trust that bf or even ebm will properly nourish the babies.
I am really tired of people suggesting that I (and other neonatologists like
me) do not support breastfeeding because we use the available best evidence to
support optimal growth for our premies going home. Marsha - I love you and
all you do - but you are NOT a neonatologist nor a dietician (that I am aware
of). Premies were never meant to survive!!! Feeding them anything but
amniotic fluid is non-physiologic! I NEVER talk with salespeople - except to tell
them to leave the unit!
