Hi,
My name is Iwona. I am a student within the nursing program at Community
College in Indiana. Below I am including a summary of the research that led to
my question.
Breast-feeding by HIV positive mothers is contraindicated in U.S. Statistics
show that the risk of passing the virus through the breast feeding is 14 %
unless it is stopped after first six months. The risk then is as little as 5 %.
HIV positive mothers who decide to breast feed are faced with a choice of
either going underground (to flee the country) or risking a possibility to have
their children removed by authorities. During my research I learned about two
methods to inactivate HIV virus in mother’s milk, the Pretoria pasteurization
and Flash-heating.
The Pretoria pasteurization is achieved by boiling the pot of water, removing it
from the heat and placing the jar filled with milk in the pot for 20 minutes. The
Flash-heating method involves placing the covered container in a pot of
water, heating it until water bubbles, and then removing the jar and letting it
cool down.
Both of these methods allow preserving much of the quality of the breast milk
while inactivate HIV viruses.
