The way Cathy describes it is what I suggest to mothers all the time
when their supply is low. If the baby is nursing well, this would not
be necessary and we would tell moms to do switch nursing or nurse more
often, etc. Usually if a mom is pumping it is because the baby is not
effectively breastfeeding and the more we can do to mmic the behavior
of a baby, the more likely there will be more milk. Also, many women
are overwhelmed with the pumping and the washing and letting them know
they can skip a washing in these clusters of pumping makes it even
easier! For years we told mothers that cluster feedings are normal,
many babies cluster feed and then give a longer sleep stretch, etc.
It makes sense that if it is what babies do, pumping moms could do it
to.
