Hi All,

I got this urgent request from another LC - I have her permission to post to
Lactnet as I cannot answer her questions: Please respond to her privately.
Thank you!

Jaye

Hello, hope private post is ok, looking for info. Mom agrees to my posts.
4 weeks post partum, struggling with cracked bleeding nipples d/t short
frenulum, which is finally clipped. Nipples are healing. But she developed
mastitis on L breast. Round of Meds, felt better briefly, then admitted to
hosp, high fever, severe mastitis. baby refusing left side, nursing rt,
pumping left. Placed on Vanc. IV, routine blood work, then Breastmilk from L
side cultured, came back MRSA, Rt breast was not cultured. She cont'd to
nurse Rt side only. Discarding Left pumped milk. Now being told to stop
breastfeeding entirely, or pump and dump until that L breast cultures clear
of MRSA. What to do and how to advise. All info is ambiguous. Do we
culture rt breastmilk as well. Should baby be tested and how, where. What
are risks to baby now. Physicians in that group, are upset. Stating many
moms out there that they are treating for mastitis. Should they bring them
all in and culture their breastmilk. they want standards of practice for
this problem. Any suggestions?
I feel this will spiral into a verbalized fear to mothers. They will
formula feed. "to be safe". Thank you for your help. Carla Bolen-Hebert
