Dear friends,

Jennifer's remarks remember me of my thoughts about the allergic-via-mothers'-milk babies.
Isn't it so that if a nursling reacts allergic to allergens in his mother's milk, the mother per definition is allergic as well and has an compromised gut? Isn't it so that the large particles that are responsible for allergies will not pass the healthy gut of the mother and can only pass if her gut is not intact?
And yes, I also agree with Jennifer that cessation of symptoms not necessarily means real healing. The disease may only have become sub-clinical. So (near-)total elimination is a good idea for both mom and child. I would suggest to observe mom for symptoms when re-introducing nutrients even better than the child.
By the way, in the Netherlands we use the term ''elimination-provocation diet'',because the re-introduction (provocation) of foods is a integral part of the therapy.

Warmly,

Gonneke,IBCLC, LLLL in southern Netherlands

Subject: [LACTNET] Total Elimination Diet-CNN Story

 I am not surprised at
the outcome. How can we say that this baby healed simply b/c we see no
more symptoms? I also rarely buy the argument that kids outgrow these
allergies-- I think the symptoms just become more accepted as normal.
Even more importantly though are the typical problems that moms have
under these circumstances--first the assumption, especially by doctors,
that mothers cannot/will not do these things for their babies and
secondly that the doctors involved ignore the real problem, which is
the mother's own gut health. Note that the mom in NJ commented that she
personally never felt better in her life than on the elimination diet.
Bet no one encouraged her to stay on it, though.

"Nursing an allergic baby, Mom goes on 'total elimination. Some nursing moms

turn to "elimination diets"-- cutting out common allergens.

To try to ease her nursing daughter's severe digestive problems, Associated.

Press writer Rebecca Boone tried eating only a handful of foods and adding

new ones, one at a time."
