I don't have the research in hand, but the course I took through UCSD (taught by Gini 
Baker, IBCLC and a slew of others after her name) said that the reason 8-12 was 
recommended was that babies fed at least 8 times in 24 hours had the least risk of 
jaundice...


actually i just found the reference...


DeCarvalho M, Klaus MH, Merkatz RB, Frequency of breastfeeding and serum bilirubin 
concentration, Am J Dis Child. 1982 Aug; 136(8) 737-8.

it says in my notes from the course that this is the basis for recommendation for feeding 
8-12 times in 24 hours...

"bilirubin levels correlate inversely with number of feedings over first 3 days"
