Dear Morgan,
I feel bad for the way mom was treated by the staff. Calling in cps was in my
opinion a bit hasty. Not sure why the baby was delivered early, or if it will
affect the outcome of this article, but it is sure worth a try. Many moms must
use supervised pain meds to lead a productive life. I hope this article makes
mom feel a bit more secure and not labeled as a "druggie". I just came across
(tonight) an article from the AAP regarding pain management and
breastfeeding. Pediatrics vol. 1 January 2008, pp 106-114. I put the link
below. Here is the basic conclusion for Methadone Maintenance and
Breastfeeding in the neonatal period.
Results: Concentrations of methadone in breastmilk were low (range: 21.00-
462.0ng/mL) and not related to maternal dose. Their was a significcant
increase i methadone concentrations in breast milk over time for all 4 sampling
times. Concentrations of methadone in maternal plasma were not different
between groups and were unrelated to maternal dose. Concentraations of
methadone in infant plasmaa were low (range:2.2 -8.1 ng/mL) in all samples.
They were comparing infants on formula vs those whose moms took
methadoneand breastfed. Infants in both groups underwent neurobehavioral
assessments on days 3, 14, and 30; there were not significant effects of
breastfeeding on neurobehavioral outcomes. Fewer infants in the breastfed
group required pharmacotherapy for neonatal abstinance sydrome, buth this
was not a statistically significan finding.
Remember, I summerized the above: please read the whole paper. If you can't
get the link please e-mail me off list and I will type out the objective, and
methods used.
Sincerely,
robin
