Karleen states, "Artificial infant feeds put infants at greater risk of
infection for three reasons - firstly they are denied normal immune support
that is delivered via breastfeeding; secondly components of infant formula
actively make them more vulnerable to infection and make it more difficult
for them to fight infection; thirdly they are exposed to higher bacterial
loads in their feeds and higher risk of user error in feed
preparation/storage/delivery. I think the second mechanism is often
overlooked.
And, added to that they have a much greater risk for aspiration, then to
aspirational pneumonia.
