As a physician in the medical "establishment", I believe my job is to
provide the best care I can, using available evidence, my experience, my brain and
my heart. I do my best and hope that others do the same. I try to keep my
mind open to therapies and beliefs that challenge what I was taught, while
still embracing the scientific method.
I believe that we all want the same things - healthy mothers, infants,
families and communities. If we knew for sure what was "right", we would all do
the same thing. As our training and experiences differ, and there is very
little evidence for a lot of what we "know" and "do" (for LCs, Doulas,
Chiropractors, as well as MDs!), we will often have differences of opinion.
I support Marsha's view that in the USA, the best way to have LCs taken
seriously is to get them licensed, and therefore reimbursed for what they do.
