It is a myth that breastfeeding babies do not get gas or colic - and it can
be really distressing. Apart from advising the mother to keep a diary of
what she eats and correlate it with colic attacks, there are first-aid
measures such as gently massaging baby`s tummy, here some people rub a
little vodka on the baby`s tummy - or holding him in the "aeroplane"
position, with his tummy resting on the parent`s (or grandparent`s/helper`s)
arm.
Gripe water saved my sanity when my children were small but there have been
suggestions that it is not as pure as it sounds. There should be some
information in the archives.
I picked up samples of Dentinox colic remedy and teething gel at the NCT
conference last June. Only when I got it home and wanted to offer the colic
drops it to my new grandson did I really look at the ingredients and was
shocked at how much food colouring E and other additives were listed. I
wrote to Dentinox and they wrote a very inadequate reply, so Dentinox is off
my list.
A teaspoon of boiled water in which dill or cammomile has been infused for a
few minutes can be helpful. This is not akin to offering water instead of
breast milk but just a first-aid remedy when the baby is red in the face,
screaming at the peak of his lung capacity, drawing up his knees and making
weird noises from the rear end - and still with no relief.
