Hi Helen,

I've a book called something like 'iconic photographs' , well, it's about
iconic photographs anyway. One of them is the photo of the migrant
mother, Florence Thompson nursing her baby in a roadside shelter. There
were others of her, but this one seems to be the most famous. Does anyone
know when it became so famous? Was it in the 50s or 60s , or was it
earlier. Or even later, Just wondering where this image of poverty and
breastfeeding fits in. >>
The famous series of photographs of Florence Thompson was taken by Dorothea
Lange in 1936 during the Great Depression. Lange was photo-documenting the
conditions of migrant farm workers for the federal Farm Security Administration.
I don't know when the photo became so widely known although newspapers could
publish the pictures taken by the FSA photographers freely. The Migrant
Mother photos were also exhibited in 1941. The wikipedia entry for Florence
Thompson shows all six of the photographs.
Hope this helps.
Warmly,
