I saw Dia's note about how their area is starting to get the word out about
safe co sleeping. I love Dr McKenna. What would we do without his research?
Here, just in the past month, we are having inservices and skills labs with
instructions to give handouts like the one below from first candle to
parents regarding safe sleep.
http://www.firstcandle.org/modelbehavior/wbu.html
Scroll down under the safe sleep practices for the well baby nursery. On pg
3 it gives the rules that no one is to co sleeping in the hospital and at
home. A BIG NO NO. First Candle is very careful to state early in the power
point presentation that SIDS is an unexplained death, but later has slides
that states that SIDS can be prevented by not cosleeping. They are careful
in the wording but later lump information in the slides to tell the audience
that death by soffication or overlay is also SIDS.
The speaker who was taught by First Candle is doing these inservices. She
threatens that "there are many law suits filed against hospitals who FAIL to
teach and document the teaching done with parents warning them about the
risks of sleeping with their babies". Of course words like law suits sends
out shivers!! And the First Candle info is free so it is given out. At least
we don't give out any formula dischg bags!!!
