Hello everyone, I have been lingering here, reading what I could and working to absorb your wisdom for a few months.
I just finished reading "Night" by Elie Wiesel, and if you haven't read it, you should.
It has nothing to do with breastfeeding.
But, one line in his book is pertinent to the ongoing discussions here, and it is this:
"We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. "Night, page 118.
This line is from his acceptance speech of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.
OK, so if you'll bear with me, this is how it applies to breastfeeding......
We (pro-breastfeeding RN's, IBCLC's and Breastfeeding Helpers etc) are the ones who have to take sides and speak the truth to everyone we meet about the goodness of breastfeeding and how our complacent culture in which 'a little formula never hurt anyone' is really tormenting babies. The oppressor is the formula manufacturer who doesn't find resistance in the healthcare community.
I fear I may sound too militant. I promise I am not one to bludgeon non-breastfeeding women! I just felt energized by this line in the book and felt that I had to share it with the community to encourage us to continue the struggle to change our culture to be pro-breastfeeding, one baby/mother dyad at a time.
Best wishes,
Sara Munday, RN
Aspiring IBCLC who didn't get hired into a newborn nursery because she opened her mouth too freely about being pro-breastfeeding, anti-formula. Oh well.
