well, consider some of the consequences: all those wetlands disappearing
down along the gulf coast, that were supposed to prevent excessive flooding,
etc.
people building expensive condos in places liable to get hit by mudslides,
forest fires, etc.
the whole point of having this legislation & planning & zoning & building
codes, etc., is that things are not supposed to be redecided every year,
according to the particular brand of corruption in charge at the moment,
it's supposed to identify important stuff worth saving, reasons for saving
it, reasons why things shouldn't be built where/as they are because, even if
it ain't quite obvious to all the dimmest bulbs, there are often good
reasons for doing so, and it gets kind of tiring explaining the reasons for
it all everytime one of these dim bulbs gets replaced...
but as long as a quick buck talks louder than the potential consequences of
mudslides, global warming, forest fires, hurricanes, etc., then people will
keep ignoring zoning/planning reports, legislation, common sense...
i used to have some respect for the dutch, cuz they have to plan on land use
way ahead, but... now i'm not sure if they ain't jiving me, too...
