I have been teaching mothers/fathers/babies about breastfeeding for 20
years. If there is one thing I have learned its that there is no one "right" way
for every mother. Several years ago I stopped teaching different holds in my
prenatal breastfeeding class. Rather, I teach the basic principals of a
comfortable, assymetrical latch and tell the participants that this works
regardless of what position they choose to use. I use as an example a mother
that I observed a number of years ago semi-reclining in a typical hospital bed.
The baby was latched face down to her left breast and the father was holding
the baby's feet pointed towards mother's shoulder! She was post-c-section
and didn't want the baby near her incision. Everyone was comfortable and
happy and the baby was nursing beautifully. I'm not sure what this hold would
be called? :)
