I have experienced both sides of this issue. That is, a healthcare provider
did indeed give out what I would consider to be very lousy advice to a
mother. I have experienced this on multiple occasions and I either heard the
hcp say it or I verified with him/her that is what was said. (discontinue bf
for jaundice, tongue tie doesn't affect bf, formula top-ups won't affect bf,
etc). So, yes, of course, this does happen all too frequently.
I have also experienced mothers who did something totally different from
what was recommended, or stated they were told something by me that I
definitely did not say. It was written out for her and sometimes 2 hrs was
spent one on one with her. I have experienced this several times also.
That is why, in response to Jaye's post, I stated that it is possible for
one of these scenarios to have occurred, or maybe, a little of both. I do
not believe that mother's go completely senile or have amnesia after giving
birth, but many have expressed to me that they are somewhat overwhelmed and
sleep deprived, and forgot this or that, or just couldn't get around to it.
This seems particularly true when a mother is experiencing a big problem
and/or lots of pain.
Breastfeeding information and support is sorely lacking all around the
globe, I will agree. Anything we can do to improve it and gain alliances,
rather than enemies, will help mothers in the long run. I have had
experiences where it is apparent to me that an hcp, for example, just cannot
be reformed, and those situations were quite maddening and have made me feel
quite murderous, and gets my stress level up exponentially just thinking
about it now.
