Difficult birth, asymmetrical, asynclitic positioning, deep-suctioning,
vacuum birth (during a Csection or a vaginal delivery), shoulder
dystocia or any forceful manipulation during birth, prolonged second
stage.  2 main things are aversion due to oral interventions to the baby
or musculo-skeletal conditions from either intervention or just
unpreventable mal-positions of the baby during labor or delivery.
That's my take after 35 years working in labor and delivery and 22 years
in lactation in a hospital setting and outpatient practice.

Dear friends,

In order to clear my mid in a discussion with non-LC health providers I
seek the combined wisdom of this wonderful community.
In your opinion and/or experience what are the primary and secondary
causes for a newborn, say in the first week of life, to over-stretch
(arch) his back, thus pushing himself off of the breast when mom tries
to latch him on?
