Dear Friends:
I understand that there is a debate on this topic. Does colostrum actually
disappear when the mature milk volume increases, or is it diluted? Generally,
the concentration of immunoglobulins, fat-soluable vitamins and total proteins
decreases, while lactose, fat, caloric content and water-soluable vitamins
increase.
Reading the 6th edition of Lawrence and Lawrence on this didn't help me much,
although I learned that there is uric acid in colostrum that serves as an
anti-oxidant. Perhaps babies that pass brick-dust urine in the early days are
doing better than we thought?
warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI
