Dear LACTNETters,
I wanted to express my heartfelt thanks for all your help with the abscess
surgery situation of my friend. Thanks to your suggestions and support she
sought out a second opinion from a major medical center in Pennsylvania. The
surgeon there immediately removed the drain inserted by the previous surgeon
from her breast, used ultrasound-guided needle aspiration to remove infected
fluid from that and other sites on her breast (by the time she was seen, my
friend had multiple other abscesses in her breast), cultured the sample and
prescribed the appropriate antibiotics for her. Although the antibiotics were
not compatible with breastfeeding, the surgeon strongly discouraged my friend
from weaning and suggested pumping and dumping the milk and continued
breastfeeding thereafter. My friend has returned to this surgeon multiple times
for follow-up and yesterday she was cleared and will be able to resume
breastfeeding on both sides (!) in a couple of days when her antibiotic course
is completed!
My friend sounds wonderful and she is so happy with the outcome. What a
difference knowledge and support can make!
Thanks very much for helping - LACTNET is truly an amazing resource.
Sincerely,
Cecilia Tomori
