One of the more useful things I've done in my life was to minor in
anthropology during my undergrad years. It was very enlightening to look
at cultures in general, and to step out of mine and look at it more
objectively. Just realizing which values and practices are cultural
constructs has allowed me more autonomy, allowing me to decide whether
or not to follow them, instead of never even realizing there are other ways.
Culture is meant to act as a stabilizing force on behavior. Sometimes
this has positive results, sometimes negative. The more we understand
how cultural values are shaped and transmitted, the more effective we
can be in helping to restore the cultural value of breastfeeding.
