If you have a digital camera, try getting a photo of the hard/soft 
palate junction, and examine it for notches, irregularities in the 
smooth, semicircular junction, and translucent areas. (You can send me a 
photo if you get one, I'd be happy to tell you if I see anything unusual).

The baby can be induced to gag with a cotton swab touched to the soft 
palate, then you can snap the photo. The soft palate should move during 
the gag.

If the soft palate is structurally normal, it still might not be 
functionally normal. Does the baby ever lose milk through the nose? Does 
his breathing start to sound harsh and wet as he feeds? These can be 
signs of velopharyngeal insufficiency.
