Most hospitals give free formula, however it comes from a discharge nurse,
not the LC. I worked as a hospital LC from 1986-1991. I was uncomfortable
about the bags, but there wasn't much I could personally do about it, other
than to encourage moms NOT to use it, but pass it on to a formula feeding
friend. :-(
You wouldn't believe how many moms, when I ask why they are doing both (at
first ped vss) say because the nurse gave it to me, because they said my
baby was too big etc etc etc ad nauseum. I'm sorry, but in the average US
hosptal the biggest pushers of formula are nurses :-( Perhaps if there were
strong hospital policies VS formula (ala Baby Friendly) this wouldn't be so
