Dear Friends:
Paula Meier, at the LLLI conference in Chicago, described a Systemic
Inflammatory Response Syndrome as a response to localized inflammation in the guts of
premature babies fed formula. SIRS can lead to a number of chronic diseases
(Crohn's, Inflammatory Bowel disease, celiac disease, diabetes, allergies,
ulcerative colitis, necrotizing enterocolitis). If baby's guts are colonized with
the wrong bacteria, the surface of the gut develops an inflammatory response.
Human milk is protective against SIRS in premature infants.
However, as babies born via cesarean section have the wrong colonization, I
expect that we will be seeing more babies with gut dysfunction.
If you do a google scholar search for Systemic Inflammatory Response
Syndrome, you will find many articles describing this condition.
warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI
