Andrea your statement below about the baby who suffered a stroke makes me
wonder if this baby has correct tongue peristalsis. Is mom's supply overly
abundant so that he has difficulty with swallowing? The trial of formula may be
confusing because when he fed from the bottle he was able to handle the flow
better with a more closed mouth. Has mom tried positioning to help the baby?
"Unfortunately, he had bad reflux and spit up and cried constantly, but mom
persevered. Then he started having blood in his stools. They eventually were
referrred to a GI doc who put her on an elimination diet. That didn't help."
If it definitely does seem to be her diet, and she wants to try digestive
enzymes, they are available in health food stores, not just with prescription. I
am working with a mom whose baby with reflux and posterior tongue tie has
eliminated the specks of blood in his stools by improving latch and nursing from
one breast per feed; he's still fussy often but hopefully after the frenotomy
he'll do better.
