Okay, I have been reading about this everytime i log into lactnet. I am one
more example of having letdown after I weaned my youngest. I had no idea
this happened to other people. I was uneasy about why my body was
reacting this way after I had weaned my son for a good year before I took the
job as the hopital LC. As I was teaching moms and using my own anatomy to
show positioning, especially the left side (yes over my clothes) I noticed my
left breast was getting bigger. NO kidding. I kept denying it was letdown....
Until I got in the shower one day..Ya you know what happened. I went to my
OB/Gyn to get a blood level of prolactin. At that time not knowing it wouldn't
show any increase due to the physiology of when prolatcin peaks after ones
child is beyond a tiny newborn. When the level came back "normal" I thought
it was all in my head. I even had to get a cloth breast to show latching. I
was beginning to get lopsided.
To make a long story short, I agree, someone should do a research paper on
this. I feel I could have started nursing a baby. Still do at times. That would
be a hoot being in my 40 something and sending my first born to college now.
What a powerful drive our bodies have. I had no idea, I was one of so many.
I wonder, would a Grandma be able to nurse her grandchild, if her daughter
could not. Maybe this happened long ago in our hunter gathering society. I
find it facinating.
Thanks for listening,
robin
