As far as I know, we don't have an answer to that question, but it's all we can do some times. Human milk fortifier would be preferable and has been shown to improve outcome, but adding formula to breastmilk is done very often. The only alternative would be not to give them the breastmilk, and that is not an acceptable choice.
If you do find any research on it, please share.

Subject: [LACTNET] Bioavailability of breastmilk

Hi wisewomen,

I have a question from a nutritionist and I was wondering if any of you
could point me in the direction of any relevant literature or research on
the subject.

Her question is, if and how could the bioavailiablity of breastmilk be
affected by the introduction of supplements. She is talking about premies
of less than 500grs. being at at risk of osteopenia, in a situation where
breastmilk fortifiers are not approved. Would it be advisable to supplement
with formula in order to get the extra calcium and phosphorus?

I´ve read some articles of Tsang on the subject, and although very useful,
they do not address this specific issue.

Any input would be appreciated.

TIA
