hi kathy
thanks for your answer.
magnesium sulfate lowers the threshold for convulsions and that's why it is
given in eclampsia and pre-eclampsia. it is also believed to have the same
effect on uterine muscle, although that is not accepted by all (some think it
does nothing).
i can't really understand why it should interfere with milk production. unless,
when used in really high doses, it interferes with the contraction of breast
lobules... but what i ask myself is: have you checked or do you know what
were the magnesium levels (in blood) of these women?
do you know if there is anything written about this (any article or something)?
i'm going to post this in the list, so maybe somebody else can help.
thanks
m. pina, MD

Magnesium sulfate is given IV to mothers with high blood pressure or
sometimes they tell me it is to stop the contractions when the baby is
too early, like premature labor. Why it does this is unknown, but I have
seen moms get lots of mag sulfate before and after delivery and not make
much milk. Like pumping 1 teaspoon total each time for days and days and
then maybe getting an ounce out on day 7-10. And using hospital grade
pumps and being taught properly by myself with large enough flanges.
