In the latest issue of Amningsnytt Jerker Nordlund suggests an
explanation of why. Here is an abbreviation of his article, in
translation.
It surely isn't the sight of the naked breast that upsets, as
magazines and underwear ads expose much more naked skin on breasts
than what's visible when a woman breastfeeds.
Breastfeeding incites satisfaction of needs and makes us painfully
aware of how unsatisfying our own lives often are. It makes us ponder
what we ourselves miss in our lives.
He quotes Oscar Wilde:
A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is
exquisite, and leaves one unsatisfied.
And this is why, states Nordlund, pornography may exist in public -
it makes us hungry, it urges us to consume more, increases our
desires and makes us commercially exploitable.
A breastfeeding mother shows what satisfaction is and reminds us of
our own vulnerability. She demonstrates our exposedness and how
hopelessly lost we are in our striving for satisfaction of needs.
Thereforethe breastfeeding woman is anti-commercial. That's what
makes her provocative and not that she brings someting private into
public space.
This was a real challenge to translate and I'm afraid my translation
just gives a rough idea. I think it's the best theory on why
breastfeeding in public stirs up strong feelings, even in Sweden.

editor of the Swedish bf magazine Amningsnytt
