I'm an LLLL, I got a call today from a mother of a 4 week old baby,
after talking about pumping and storing milk for when she's working
she also asked about birth control and breastfeeding. I told her that
hormonal birth control does have an impact on milk supply, she
specifically talked with her care provider about the Mirena IUD.
The question is this: does the Mirena have a record of negatively
impacting milk supply, I've looked in the archives and there are not
many recent posts about the Mirena. It would seem less likely to have
negative potential because it's designed to deliver progesterone
locally rather than systemically.
More specific information would be helpful in equipping this mother to
work with her care provider in making the best decision for her
situation. Other relevant info, she won't be getting/starting anything
until at least 7 weeks postpartum.
(She gave her permission for me to address this question to Lactnet.)
Thanks,
Ruth, LLLL
