Thanks for the word picture. This kind of thing is really helpful for
explaining to parents why the bottles they thought were so great ( especially the
ones the hospital gave them for free), are actually extinguishing their baby's
normal feeding behaviors in favor of behaviors that move towards
passive/reactive/protective, only to cause more and more problems with breastfeeding, a
relaxed, but very active/proactive/responsive way to be nurtured. These
shaped nipples seem to distort the baby's tongue into a configuration that begins
to feel like the norm, which only exacerbates the problems, especially when
combined with unmanageable flow rates.
