When I first read the posts on this, my impression was that these parents are
probably using "Babywise" or its original "Growing Kids God's Way" --the Ezzo
program. You can get an idea of where they are when you hear things
like "He's such a good baby." or how happy parents are that the baby can
sleep for long stretches. The pacifier use was also a tip-off to me. Ezzo seems
to emphasize that going long stretches between feedings is the goal, and
snacking between meals a detriment to healthy digestion.

On another tangent--could the mom be recovering from an eating disorder? (If
she is bulimic, she will not present as over-skinny, and may perhaps look
robust). As a recovering anorexic who has had some contact with moms who
are nursing and working on their body image two things pop out: 1. mom is
afraid to make the baby "fat", so when the baby wants to nurse often they
try to distract the baby until mom feels that an appropriate time interval has
passed. 2. One of the moms had other hormonal issues and did not have a full
supply. She mistook the baby's sleeping at the breast as contentment, and
was very worried about feeding her son too often, she didn't want him to learn
to associate food and comfort.

So, in essence, this could be a management issue that has now escalated into
a medical condition for the baby. I disagree about Munchausen's and think
that everyone should be careful about thinking that about a mom. A friend of
mine has been experiencing many feeding problems with her son and has
sought opinions with diverse specialists. One of them put "Munchausens" in
her son's chart and threatened to call in Social Services. The latest doctor--
the first one to really listen to her and her son's history--has diagnosed
severe milk protein allergy. He has been getting appropriate food for about 2
weeks and is making great strides. (Sharing her story with permission).

Sorry for the excessive length of this post!
