Jaye: I have taught such a class for 20+ years. I teach a 6 hour prenatal
breastfeeding class ( three 2 hour classes a week apart). The first class I
gear towards answering questions parents have about breastfeeding, dispelling
myths, breastfeeding in an unsupportive culture, and some basic A&P. The
2nd class we get more into the mechanics of breastfeeding, as well as how to
deal with problems, when/how to introduce solid foods; mother-led and baby-
led weaning. The 3rd class I call my returning to work and breastfeeding
class. We discuss pumps ( I have a wide variety I "review" in the class as well
as any pumps the couples may have already been given or purchased; how to
pump; I show moms how to fit breastfeeding into their particular lifestyles; milk
storage; day care issues; introducing the bottle ( I have a variety of
bottles/nipples to show). This 3rd class has always been very popular - the
couples come for the 1st class with questions about pumping and bottles. I
ask if they can wait until the 3rd class! Let's learn how to breastfeed 1st,
then figure out how to fit it into lifestyles.
Several times over the years I have tried offering such a class for PP moms
and their babies who are at least a month old. Have never had very good
attendance - don't know if moms are still too overwhelmed with new
motherhood or what. I find a lot of my phone calls as well as my support
group discussions deal with the "fitting breastfeeding into my lifestyle" topics.
Now whether this falls under Code compliance, I don't know, but I try to
meet "consumer demand" and this is what my moms are telling me they need.
I have many a mom tell me they would not be breastfeeding for as long as
they did (or are) if not for the information they got from the 3rd class, through
the support group, or in a phone conversation with me.
Simply put, breastfeeding duration is increased if a mom finds a way to
successfully incorporate it into HER lifestyle.
